Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in America, with over 300,000 performed last year alone. Breast augmentation can help to improve the size and shape of the breasts, allowing you to feel more comfortable and confident in your body.

Dr. Gregory Brucato takes a very natural approach to breast augmentation, and he will always take your individual anatomy into account when helping you choose a final size and shape. Breasts that are too big for your frame can cause complications, look unnatural, and lead to back pain in the future, so he will often caution patients against breast surgery with overly large implants.

If you are interested in breast augmentation, schedule your free consultation with Dr. Brucato today by calling 203-431-7644. We welcome patients from across Connecticut, including Ridgefield, Wilton, Danbury and neighboring communities.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the practice of enlarging the breasts through the use of implants. It’s different from a breast lift, which is a procedure to lift sagging breasts into a more youthful, perky position.

Breast augmentation is highly customizable, and is very safe when performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Brucato prides himself on both his skill and artistry when performing breast surgery, and he cares deeply about making sure you are completely satisfied and happy with your breast augmentation. He will always take the time to listen to you and give you the best personalized care.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation

You may be a good breast augmentation candidate if you:

  • Are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your breasts
  • Have significantly asymmetric breasts you’d like to correct
  • Are in general good health
  • Are not a smoker, smoking can increase risk
  • Are interested in breast augmentation for yourself, not for anyone else

Having breast augmentation surgery is a highly personal decision that you should make on your own. It can be very rewarding, but it’s your body and you should be comfortable with your decision. Don’t let anyone pressure you into plastic surgery.

If you are a smoker, you should be able to quit for at least two weeks before and after surgery. If you have any chronic medical conditions that may be a contraindication for elective surgery, please be sure to let Dr. Brucato know. It’s often fine to have plastic surgery done as long as your condition is controlled, but you should check with your primary doctor just to be safe.

Silicone vs Saline Breast Implants

Dr. Brucato offers silicone, saline, and “gummy bear” implants. Each type of implant has its own set of benefits, but ultimately the skill of your surgeon has more to do with your final look than the type of implant you choose. That being said, here’s what you need to know about each type of implant.

Silicone Implants

  • Have a soft gel texture
  • Look and feel the most natural
  • Smooth
  • Round
  • Are FDA-approved for women over 21

“Gummy bear” implants are a type of silicone implant that are firmer in texture, like a gummy bear. They hold their shape well and feel very natural.

Saline Implants

  • Are filled with a saline solution after being inserted into the breasts
  • Are smooth and round
  • Are FDA-approved for women over 18

One thing to keep in mind is that if a saline implant deflates, it will be immediately apparent and require replacement as soon as possible. It’s harder to tell when a silicone implant deflates, which is why it’s recommended that women with silicone implants undergo periodic MRIs.

Breast Implant Placement and Incision Options

Breast implants can be placed above or below the muscles in the chest. Below the muscle is the most common and most natural looking.

You also have options as to where your incisions will be located. The most common breast augmentation incision locations are:

  • Inframammary (below the breast, in the fold)
  • Areolar (around the areola)

Inframammary incisions are generally considered the safest and best choice. The scars are concealed in the fold between your breast and torso, and it’s easiest to achieve a good placement of the implant.

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift

A breast augmentation and a breast lift are two different procedures with two different outcomes. While breast augmentation aims to enlarge the breast, a breast lift aims to correct breasts that have started to sag. If you have sagging breasts that you would also like to enlarge, it is possible to have a combination breast augmentation and breast lift procedure.

If you have only minor sagging, breast implants alone may be enough. However, if you have more significant sagging, a breast lift will likely be recommended. Breast lift surgery leaves more visible scars, but most women who undergo the procedure find that it’s worth it.

Breast Implant Removal and Revision Surgery

Breast implants usually last a long time, but there are some cases where you may need to have them removed or replaced. These can include:

  • Complications such as capsular contracture or rippling
  • Wanting to change the size or shape of your implants
  • Migrated implant
  • Deflated implant
  • Ruptured implant

Breast augmentation revision is a more complex procedure than an initial breast augmentation. Dr. Brucato is experienced in breast augmentation revisions as well as breast implant removals. He will do his best to make sure you obtain the results that you want.

In some cases of breast implant removal, the breast skin may be stretched out after the implant is gone. In these cases, you can opt for a breast implant removal with a breast lift. This will address any loose or sagging skin and ensure your breasts still look good even after the implants are removed.

Recovery after breast implant removal or revision varies depending on the reason for and complexity of your procedure. Recovery after capsular contracture correction, for instance, might take a little bit longer than recovery after other types of implant removal.

What is recovery like after a Breast Augmentation with Implants?

After your breast augmentation, you’ll need to take it easy for a few days. We recommend having someone at home who can help with childcare and housework as needed, so that you can relax and allow your body to heal.

You’ll be sore for the first couple of days, but you’ll have prescription medication to relieve any pain or discomfort. Most patients are able to switch to over the counter ibuprofen or Tylenol after just two or three days.

Dr. Brucato always schedules a follow-up visit either the day after or within the first few days after your surgery, so that he can check up on you and make sure everything looks good. He’ll also give you detailed post-operative instructions to follow to ensure you heal well.

When you can return to Work & Normal Activity After A Breast Augmentation

You should be able to return to work the first week after your breast implant surgery. Light exercise such as walking is encouraged in the first week, and you can start light cardio that doesn’t aggravate your breasts after the first two to four weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and contact sports for the first 8 weeks.

Follow these tips to help you on the road to a quick recovery:

  • Follow all of Dr. Brucato’s instructions carefully and go to every post-op appointment
  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Don’t do anything that aggravates your breasts, such as lifting your arms high or picking up anything heavy
  • Make sure you have clothes you can get into without lifting them over your head
  • Don’t try to do too much too soon – allow your body time to rest and recover

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

The cost of breast augmentation surgery will vary depending on the extent and complexity of your procedure. During your one on one consultation, after carefully listening to your goals and examining your body, Dr. Brucato will let you know exactly how much you can expect to pay to get the results you want.

Cosmetic surgery is typically not covered by insurance, and it can be a lot to pay out of pocket. We offer breast augmentation financing through CareCredit, a well respected plastic surgery financing company. You can choose from a variety of plans, often at 0% or low APR. If you are interested in financing your procedure, please let us know during your consultation and we will be happy to answer any questions you have about it.

We also accept credit cards, cash and checks.
